Keishuen Garden / Yoko Museum of Art

The supreme Japanese garden "Keishu-en"

Keishu-en, located in the city of Takeo in Saga Prefecture, is a supreme Japanese garden that blends traditional Japanese beauty with nature. This garden, which spreads out over an expansive site of approximately 3,000 tsubo (9,917 square meters), was created in 1979 by the famous landscape gardener Kinsaku Nakane.

The charm of each season

The charm of Keishu-en lies in its beautiful scenery, which changes with the seasons.

The colors of spring

In spring, the famous weeping cherry blossoms bloom elegantly, and the colorful azaleas vividly color the garden. The Japanese apricot blossoms are also magnificent, with red, white and weeping apricot trees vying for attention, and their fresh fragrance envelops the garden in early spring.

The coolness of summer

In summer, the water flowing between the dynamic stone masonry creates a cool sound. This sound soothes the hearts of visitors in the hot season, and gives them a sense of the Japanese summer.

Autumn leaves

In autumn, the garden is dyed red and yellow by the autumn leaves, and the contrast with the deep green of the tea fields is a spectacular sight that cannot be seen anywhere else.

Winter silence

In winter, the trees lose their leaves and the framework of the garden becomes visible. The garden in winter, which can be said to be the true essence of garden appreciation, is enveloped in a crisp, clear atmosphere and a tranquil time flows slowly by.

Nighttime lighting

The “Takeo no Akari Exhibition”, which began in 2017, includes the lighting up of Keishu-en. You can enjoy the 3,000 tsubo garden, surrounded by light while feeling the night sky. This fantastic night view brings out a different charm to the garden from the daytime, and attracts many tourists.

Stroll around the pond-style garden

The skillfully arranged large and small stones, the carefully trimmed pine trees and shrubs, and the scenery reflected in the pond are like a living painting. Walking around the pond will give you the feeling of experiencing traditional Japanese beauty.
There are also pavilions and tearooms in the garden, where you can stroll while enjoying the changing seasons and immerse yourself in traditional Japanese culture.
For photography enthusiasts, Keishu-en is also a great spot for taking photos. The scenery created by the interplay of natural scenery and man-made beauty is beautiful from any angle, and you're sure to be able to take a shot that will stay with you.

Fusion with the Yoko Museum

At the center of the Keishu-en garden is the Yoko Museum, which is built as if floating on the pond. The museum mainly exhibits Chinese ceramics, which have a deep connection with Saga, the birthplace of Japanese porcelain, and it holds a collection of valuable artworks from the Tang to Qing dynasties as a bridge for cultural exchange between Japan and China.
The museum holds three special exhibitions a year, and the exhibits are changed around three times a year. With popular exhibitions such as the “Taikan Yokoyama Exhibition” and a variety of other themed exhibitions, there is always something new to see, making it a fascinating place for art lovers. The combination of the Keishu-en Garden and the Yoko Museum of Art has created a one-of-a-kind space where you can enjoy Japanese traditional culture and art at the same time.
